"If You Think That You Are Eating Right - You May Be
Dead Wrong!"- by Dr. Trisha Rossi, Director
The
main causes of indigestion and gas are overeating, eating
wrong food combinations, eating too fast and not
taking the time for proper mastication and salivation. In
older persons, the most common cause
of indigestion and flatulence is poorly digested and putrefying
food - particularly proteins
and carbohydrates - in the intestines due to deficiency of
gastric digestive juices. Taking one or two tablets of "Hydrochloric Acid"
and a few "Dolomite" tablets with each meal
usually remedies that.
The
colon is primarily an organ of elimination, not storage. We
know that in this country especially,
this role has been perverted into that of long term storage,
making us Americans the most constipated people
in the world. It was recognized early on that certain foods promote normal elimination and
colon health, thereby also contributing to general health. The magic word now is fiber, which
is taken in all forms as an additive, meant to right the wrongs
that our usual diet has wrought
on our colons.
Judiciously
chosen fiber is certainly important. Fiber is readily available
through fresh fruits and vegetables, which
contain most other nutrients essential to good health. The
choice of vegetables and
their mode of preparation are crucial. We know that the fresh
juice of organically grown
vegetables contains not only nutrients but essential vitamins
and enzymes. These enzymes are
the key to the revitalizing and rejuvenating effects of juicing. Some have called enzymes the
essence
of the life force itself, the most elementary building blocks
of life. Hence the popular notion that
natural foods are the key to getting and staying healthy.
Enzymes
begin to lose potency at 102 degrees F and are completely
and permanently inactivated at 130 degrees
F. All store bought processed foods are required by law to
be pasteurized (i.e. heated
to 160 degrees F for a minimum of 20 minutes). In actual practice
this exposure can be much longer,
based on the convenience of the manufacturer. The reason for this is that Louis Pasteur,
the father of modern microbiology, proved that the pasteurization process destroyed all
living activities. By definition then, a processed food or
juice bought in a legal market must be
devoid of all life and lack all rejuvenating properties! What
is left is often not more than flavored
and often sugary water. The number one cause of hyperglycemia
in this country today
is the massive consumption of bottled or carton orange juice,
often "from concentrate". The pasteurizing or sterilizing system, if you will, is meant
to kill off the life force, to kill the enzymes.... for
SHELF LIFE!! Incidentally, ALL vitamin pills and capsules
on sale today are either chemically
manufactured or derived from pasteurized concentrates. Obviously,
to extract the kind of
health benefits locked in fresh fruits and vegetables, we
must prepare our own juices fresh. There is much literature on how this is done.
To
go into what foods to avoid would require an encyclopedia
literary undertaking. We need only
mention what is most detrimental. Carbonated beverages with
their high phosphoric acid content
produce damage far beyond direct toxic effects. Phosphoric
acid leaches sodium and calcium from the body,
directly aggravating nervous, arthritic and osteoporotic conditions. Loss
of stomach sodium
results in impaired digestion and absorption with its numerous
deleterious consequences.
High gluten foods, such as BREAD and other starches,
simply clog up the body's pathways
of elimination. Refined and artificial sugars wreak havoc
with the metabolism and the immune
system. The high fat meats are probably the leading
single contributor to colon cancer, the killer of over 70,000
Americans a year.
Organic
flax seed oil as well as fruits help to lubricate the colon
wall, creating natural secretions, making it
easier for the waste to leave the bowel. Food fiber provides
bulk and promotes movement. Added fiber may be needed to promote this process.
Imbalances
in bowel function are best treated initially with a series
of professionally administered colon treatments,
followed by maintenance on a healthy individualized diet and life-style. At our center
the patients are detoxified and managed with individualized
combinations of holistic and medical
treatments designed to optimize with custom designed nutritional management programs to
maintain health.
